Why step counts differ between devices
Every device uses a different motion signal:

None of these are “wrong.” They’re measuring different proxies for the same activity. Expecting identical numbers across devices is the wrong expectation.
How accurate is RingConn step counting?
Based on our testing against manual counting:
- Walking normally: within 5-10% of actual steps
- Pushing a stroller or cart: under-counts by 20-40% (hands are stationary)
- Typing at desk: rarely triggers false steps (good)
- Cooking/gesturing: may add 200-500 phantom steps per hour
Overall accuracy is comparable to Oura and slightly below wrist-based devices for pure step counting.
Who gets frustrated (and who shouldn’t)
You’ll be frustrated if:
- You compare ring steps to phone steps and expect a match
- You use daily step count as a precise fitness target (e.g., exactly 10,000)
- You do lots of stroller/cart walking
You’ll be fine if:
- You treat steps as a 7-day trend indicator
- You care about relative changes (more active this week vs last week)
- You use steps alongside sleep and HRV for overall health picture
Tips for more useful step data
- Compare week-over-week, not day-by-day. A 7-day average smooths out sensor quirks.
- Don’t wear the ring on your dominant hand if you do lots of manual work — it may over-count from tool use.
- Ignore the first 3 days. The algorithm calibrates to your motion pattern.
- Use active calories as a complement. Steps + calories together give a better activity picture than either alone.
